  • Description: The author depicts the massive growth in the prison and jail population in the USA and the reasons that had led to such devastating numbers. However the average growth in the number of inmates has fallen disproportionally on the population: the African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the same rate and Hispanics at nearly double the rate as the white population. The author analyzes the reasons they lye behind it: historical elements and the new prison industrial complex, the changing representation of the "criminal" and the media effect, a new social scheme, the "get tough" policies and social control. Additionaly the author analyzes the conseguences: the empty neighborhoods and the interpersonal violence in them, the costs for children, health problems, disfranchisement from the voting process and the effects on women.
