Over the years I have written biblical plays to use in teaching and worship contexts for the purpose of conscientization. When I last used the following Advent play, I was urged to make it widely available for people to use in their own contexts. I offer this play and the resulting reflections on it to show how decolonization, inculturation, and liberation processes have helped me to write this piece. The main theme of the play is that Jesus preferred to place himself among the marginalized. Moreover, those who made the incarnation possible and welcomed Jesus were largely from the poor and oppressed groups. The powerful tried to obstruct his coming, but failed. I hope that when people use this play, they will be able to recognize their own position in society and reflect on the risks of welcoming Jesus, whose birth among the poor and the oppressed is a challenge to all who worship oppressive power and wealth.
