  • Abstract: ABSTRACT:

This short case is about an intern for the food and beverage area at a private country club. She has been assigned to wait tables in one of the dining rooms after 2 weeks of mentorship-style training in which she shadowed others. She is unsure whether she feels qualified and, on her first day alone, finds that she is somewhat unprepared. The intern faces several issues with her competence and confidence while attempting to perform "routine" job tasks, in this case serving large parties. Self-efficacy serves as an insightful framework to understand issues related to the task. This short case is appropriate for undergraduate courses in hospitality and human resource management focused on training, food and beverage, or customer service. An additional area that may utilize this short case is management and organizational behavior courses discussing manager or employee efficacy.
