Summary: Contents: An Epistle of Hvmfrey Lhoyd, written to Abraham Ortel, Cosmographer to Philip, the Second, King of Spaine, wherein at large and learnedly he discourseth of the iland Mona, the ancient seat of the Drvides. -- small plate of a globe with Ortelius' motto, which in other editions appears on the title-page of the Nomenclator Ptolemaicus.
  • Identifier: System number: 004834093
  • Notes: In terms of the number of plates, the only English edition of the Theatrum proved to be one of the largest permutations of the title in any language. When it appeared in 1606 it also formed the biggest collection of engraved plates ever published in England, a country then almost totally reliant on foreign engravers, although the maps were almost certainly printed in Antwerp and sent to London to be finished with letterpress and bound. Colour, which in this instance has been clumsily applied to both the maps and text, must have been added in England.
The English text (and the order of the plates) was based on the most recent Latin edition of the Theatrum, published in 1603 (van der Krogt 31:053). The translator(s) of the volume is not named, but the translation of Sweertius' life of Ortelius is credited to a 'W.B.', 'as great a lover of his learning and vertues'. R.A. Skelton has suggested that this 'W.B.' was William Bedwell, one of the Westminster translators of the King James Bible, who, Skelton claims, might have been responsible for the entire translation.
Titled 'Abrahami Ortelii Theatrum Orbis Terrarum : translated into English by John Norton. London, 1606. Parergon, sive Veteris Geographiæ aliquot Tabulæ.
