    Contains additional engraved title page from the first edition, signed "Ren. Elstrack sculpsit", with title "The history of the world" and imprint "At London, printed for Walter Burre, 1614," which has been included in the number of plates.
    Letterpress title page includes engraved portrait of the author, signed "Sim. Pass Sculp." and "Comp. Holland exe." "Gualtheri Ralegh Eqv: aur. etc. vera effigies clarriss[i]mi. viri dom[i]ni" inscribed in frame surrounding portrait. Below is the Raleigh coat of arms, with motto "Amore et virtvte" and caption "The true and lively portraiture of the honourable and learned Knight Sr. Walter Ralegh."
    Register and text continuous despite repeated page numbers 181-184 and missing page numbers 513-516. Pagination restarts from p. 1 on second page of book 3. Misprinted page numbers. Books 3-5: 397 instead of 297, 399 instead of 299, 408 instead of 308, 437 instead of 473, 649 instead of 645, 650 instead of 646.
    Unnumbered preliminary pages include one-page verse explanation of engraved title page, entitled "The minde of the front", letterpress title page, 32-page preface and 27-page table of contents. First page of book 3 is unnumbered and followed by p. 1 of new pagination sequence. Unnumbered pages at end of volume include two-page letter "To the reader", 26-page chronological tables, twelve-page index to books 1-2, and fourteen-page index to books 3-5.
    8 folded leaves of plates include six maps of Asia, north Africa and Europe and two plans of military formations and are bound in at the fold. Map comprising "A description of the land of Gosen, and Moses passage through the desert" is signed "Guli: Hole sculp:" and the map of "The desert Arabia, Arabia the stonie" signed "W.H. sc."

At head of engraved title page, a cropped inscription in a different hand: "For my cozen Newcomen". Below this, probably in another hand, a faint inscription: "Jane[?] [?]raw's[?] book [?] 1715 [?]". On p. 37 in second pagination sequence, two further ownership inscriptions: "Thos Harrison Louth Book 17[?]", and "James Harrison Louth". Repetition of both names in Book 3, p. 70 and of James Harrison in Book 5, p. 623. "John Harrison" appears in Book 5, p. 434.
    Copy note: Copy at 581.k.13. On verso of letterpress title page, where the engraved portrait of Raleigh is visible through the paper, reverse image of portrait has been outlined in ink and hand-coloured. Occasional ms. underlinings and markings, annotations and calculations in margins.
