  • Description: In this thesis I explore two of Cindy Sherman's series, both commissioned by people from the fashion industry. I first examine the 1983 series commissioned by boutique owner Dianne Benson and later placed in Interview magazine. This series contradicts certain codes within the fashion industry through Sherman's use of the grotesque, among other features. The second series discussed is the 2007 series Sherman created for Vogue Paris 's August issue using garments from Balenciaga; here, Sherman questions issues of aging within fashion. By this point, however, Sherman's work has become more accepted within the fashion industry, thus showing even more of an intersection between art and fashion, a connection that has continually increased throughout the years. In both of these series, Sherman's imagery provokes viewers to consider issues of how beauty, youth, femininity, and identity are constructed within fashion.
